7 Mistakes Every Poker Beginner Makes (And How to Fix Them)
These seven mistakes cost beginners thousands of dollars. Most players don't even realize they're making them. Learn to spot and fix these leaks in your game.
You're Probably Making at Least Three of These
Poker beginners lose money in predictable ways. The same mistakes show up at every stake. If you can eliminate these seven leaks, you'll immediately become a winning player at the micro and low stakes.
Mistake 1: Playing Too Many Hands
The most universal beginner mistake. You came to play poker, not to fold — so you play 35-40% of hands dealt to you. The problem is that the average winning player plays around 22-26% of hands.
The fix: Track your VPIP stat. If it's above 28% in full ring or 32% in 6-max, you're playing too loose.
Mistake 2: Ignoring Position
Position is the single most important factor in poker, yet beginners treat every seat the same.
The fix: Button is best, Cutoff is second best, Hijack is third. Play roughly twice as many hands from the button as from UTG.
Mistake 3: Limping Preflop
Open-limping is almost never correct in modern poker. It shows weakness and builds multi-way pots.
The fix: If your hand is worth playing, it's worth raising. If it's not worth raising, fold it.
Mistake 4: Not Betting for Value
Beginners are afraid of getting raised, so they check strong hands to "trap."
The fix: When you have a strong hand, bet. If you think your hand is best more than 50% of the time when called, you should bet.
Mistake 5: Calling Too Much on the River
By the river, the story of the hand is told. Beginners call river bets with one pair because they "want to see what they had."
The fix: On the river, ask: do I beat more of their possible hands than I lose to? If no, fold.
Mistake 6: Playing When Tired or Tilted
You just lost a big pot. You're angry. So you play another four hours trying to win it back.
The fix: Set a stop-loss before every session. When you hit it, quit immediately.
Mistake 7: Studying Without Applying
You've watched 40 hours of training videos but haven't changed how you actually play.
The fix: After each study session, write down one specific thing you'll focus on in your next playing session. One focused change at a time.
